Typography
Alexander Barty founded his eponymous practice in 2016, and in the years since he has collaborated with academic and commercial clients operating at a range of scales to help realise their communications objectives. Always interested in the visual attributes of language and theoretical debates around the influence of leading, kerning, and tracking on the perception of words, he offers an integrated design service which explores the interrelationship between text, image, and illustration.
Product
I.
Leaflets, flyers, and posters
People often think bright colours and bold text affords their posters an irresistible attraction, but the reverse is manifestly true. In simplifying the grid structure and refining the visual messaging, Alexander will ensure the essential concepts are clear, concise, and compelling.
II.
Brochures and programmes
When meeting new clients or press contacts, liaising with prospective business partners, or hosting promotional events, time is of the essence. Working with Alexander will ensure the efficient dissemination of essential information so you can focus on the subjects that matter.
IV.
Wireframe design for websites
You may have heard of wireframes from your developer, but typographic designers use them, too. Alexander employs these visual representations of webpages to inform the look and feel of the head and body text, and define its relationship with images, illustrations, and graphic elements.
III.
Books and published materials
Typography influences readers' perception of your book, even if they are unaware of the specific fonts used. While content is the key to critical and commercial success, the typography plays a subtle yet profound role in drawing the reader in and influencing their decision to keep reading.

Profile
After reading English and History of Art at Exeter, UCL, and Oxford, Alexander worked with heritage and environmental conservation before diversifying his communications portfolio in 2021. He has lectured on matters relating to language and the visual arts and has taught at various language schools as well as conducting his own vocational research.
He brings with him a distinctive and original approach to copywriting, communications, and typographic design informed by his experiences in academic and commercial contexts, and inflected with the theoretical writings of William Morris, John Ruskin, Thomas Hardy, and Frank Pick.
Deeply affected by the sentiments of the Arts and Crafts Movement, Alexander embraces opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration. He has worked closely with craftspeople in adjacent disciplines, which have thus far included bookbinders, artist-printmakers, and gold-finishers.
Often found with a nineteenth-century novel in hand, his free time is devoted to reading, writing, architectural drawing, and dėrive.
Process
I.
Research and analysis
It's important that Alexander can understand the nuances of a project before the creative process begins. For this reason, he always conducts extensive prior research, cross-referencing documentary records and conducting semi-structured interviews with his clients and partners.
III.
Creative production
Not every job comes in at a precise, exact fit, accommodating the nearest one or two words. That’s exactly why Alexander's happy to work with your copywriter, offer his own copywriting services, or support with copy editing to ensure the most visually effective typographic arrangement.
II.
Identity development
Once he has concluded his research and gathered the textual and visual elements he requires to get started, Alexander will present one or more proposed designs and elicit feedback from his clients. Where relevant, he can develop a set of identity guidelines for future typographic designs.
IV.
Print consultation
Alexander's interest in print is deep-rooted, as is his knowledge of what can be achieved with the right concepts and materials. So, if you are unsure what you want and would like to be walked through the scope and scale of binding and finishing options, he would be happy to oblige.
